83dB SPL (Signal Pressure Level) is the Magic Number relating to Monitor calibration as outlined in the SMPTE RP 200 standard for Relative & Absolute Sound Pressure Levels for Motion-Picture Multi-Channel Sound Systems. This standard is the reason why movies have a consistent average level coupled with a wide dynamic range. With such a standard in place a client or consumer does not have to adjust the Gain control on their sound reproduction system from one movie to the next. Unfortunately, there is no equivalent standard adopted by the Music Industry. Music Recordings vary considerably and level problems are further exasperated by unwitting (over) use of of Compressors and Peak Limiters especially in widespread home studio production. Such productions have a "louder is better" mentality. The loudness is achieved at the expense of dynamic range and more importantly at the expense of quality. Further inconsistencies are notable in TV Broadcast & Advertising. Therefore, 83dB was chosen to generate awareness and consideration for a more standardized protocol for Audio Levels external to the Movie Industry. Oh! It looks cool too! Back to Top ^^ |
